This is the standard unit for ordering ready-mix concrete. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. For a 20 ft × 20 ft slab at 4 inches thick, volume is 4.94 cubic yards.
Volume in cubic feet
Useful for smaller projects or when mixing bags. A 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 inches deep yields 33.33 cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards.
Bags of 80 lb concrete
Each 80 lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet. For 33.33 cubic feet, you'd need 56 bags. This is practical for small jobs like setting fence posts.
Bags of 60 lb concrete
A 60 lb bag yields approximately 0.45 cubic feet. For the same 33.33 cubic feet, you'd need 75 bags. Use this if you prefer lighter bags.
Waste factor
Always order 5-10% extra to account for spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. For 4.94 cubic yards, order 5.5 cubic yards. This prevents running short mid-pour.
Depth conversion
Depth in inches must be converted to feet by dividing by 12. A 6-inch depth becomes 0.5 feet. Failing to convert gives a volume 12 times too large.
