Measure length in feet
Measure the longest side of the slab, patio, or garden bed and enter it in the Length (ft) field. For a 12-foot by 14-foot patio, enter 12. If your measurement is 12 feet 6 inches, enter 12.5.

Measure width in feet
Measure the shorter side perpendicular to the length and enter it in the Width (ft) field. For that same patio, enter 14. Multiply 12 x 14 to get 168 square feet of surface area.

Enter depth in inches
Enter the thickness or depth in the Depth (in) field โ this is in inches, not feet. A standard concrete walkway is 4 inches thick, a driveway slab is 4 to 6 inches, and a raised garden bed might be 12 inches deep.

The calculator multiplies length x width x (depth รท 12) to get cubic feet, then divides by 27 to get cubic yards. A 12 ft x 14 ft slab at 4 inches deep equals 56 cubic feet, or about 2.07 cubic yards.

Volume in cubic feet
This is the raw three-dimensional space your project fills. A 10 ft x 10 ft slab at 4 inches deep is 33.3 cubic feet. Suppliers rarely sell by cubic feet, so this number is a stepping stone, not an order quantity.
Volume in cubic yards
Concrete, gravel, and topsoil are sold by the cubic yard in the US. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A 20 ft x 20 ft driveway at 4 inches deep is 6.67 cubic yards, which is just under one full short-bed dump truck load.
Materials needed in bags
An 80-pound bag of concrete mix yields about 0.6 cubic feet. For a 4 ft x 8 ft slab at 4 inches deep (10.67 cubic feet), you need 18 bags. Bags make sense under about 1 cubic yard; above that, ready-mix is cheaper per yard.
Materials needed in truckloads
A standard ready-mix concrete truck carries 8 to 10 cubic yards, and most suppliers charge a short-load fee under 3 yards. Gravel and topsoil trucks typically haul 10 to 15 cubic yards. Ordering 2 yards of concrete often costs $150 to $250 extra in short-load fees.
Waste allowance
Add 5 to 10 percent to any concrete order for spillage, uneven subgrade, and over-excavation. For 6.67 cubic yards, order 7.0 to 7.3 yards. Running short mid-pour means a cold joint that weakens the slab.
Square footage vs. volume
Square footage (length x width) tells you how much surface you are covering โ useful for sod, paint, or tile. Volume adds depth and tells you how much material fills that surface. A 200 sq ft area needs 200 sq ft of sod but 2.47 cubic yards of concrete at 4 inches deep.

Running short mid-pour is the worst outcome: a cold joint forms where old and new concrete meet, and that seam can crack within a year.
